On the first of September in 2014 the forward-looking project “Future Internet - Core” started with a total of 31 partners from 8 European Countries and Israel. The project is funded by the European Union as part of the Future Internet Public Private Partnership (FI-PPP) and connects closely to already ongoing projects like FI-WARE and FI-Content2, where the DFKI is also involved. The 2-year project is especially supposed to investigate the technology basis for the Future Internet. The workpackage for the ASR research sector deals with “Advanced Web-based User Interfaces” - a subject where comprehensive expertise already exists based on previous and ongoing projects.
Within the FI-Core project significant effort will be invested into the development of a strong technology basis for FI-WARE and thus into the realization of the Future Internet vision directed by the European Union (FI-PPP). The involved small and medium-sized businesses (SMB) represent a broad range of users, who test the results for road capability and therefore make a significant contribution to ensure the sustainability of the used technologies.
As part of FI-CORE the focal point of the working group ASR is totally in the field of “Advanced Web-based User Interfaces”. This portion of the project combines a set of Generic Enablers (GE) which together provide a novel approach to advanced interactive user experience for Web applications. XML3D, an extended version of HTML-5, adds various new capabilities related to real-time 3D visualization and interaction.
Its GEs, e.g. 2D- and 3D-UI-Enablers, including hardware acceleration, a scalable server for synchronizing UI experiences between many users, cloud rendering, Display as a Service, data distribution, Augmented Reality, real-virtual interaction, virtual characters, and interface designer GEs and much more besides those are based on current research and project results from the ASR department.
Together, the above GEs provide the means to develop completely new types of highly interactive Web applications, including advanced functionality such as interactive visualizations even of large data sets, interaction with the world around us, real-time synchronization for shared experiences, or the simulation of interactive robots in dynamic 3D environments.
Another key point for this work package specifically addresses the aspects of Maintenance and Consolidation. Due to the increased uptake of GEs significant efforts are needed to respond to issues and requests, improve SW and documentation, support deployment and training, etc. Besides continuous technology enhancements great importance is attached to the representation of the developed high-level Advanced UI functionality in the FI-Core-wide evaluation and demonstration activities.
We are convinced that the Advanced UI Functionality will likely be instrumental to build modern and engaging user interfaces, e.g. for Smart City, factory of the future, or robotics.
