Researchers from TU Berlin’s Database Systems and Information Management (DIMA) Group and Big Data Management (BigDaMa) Group as well as DFKI’s Intelligent Analytics for Massive Data (IAM) Group participated in the Data Science Challenge. The joint team was comprised of Mahdi Esmailoghli, Sergey Redyuk, Ricardo Martinez, Ariane Ziehn, Prof. Ziawasch Abedjan, Prof. Tilmann Rabl, and Prof. Volker Markl. Their submission entitled “[An] Explanation of Air Pollution Using External Data Sources,” was awarded 1st place by a jury consisting of representatives from both academia and industry.
The objective of the challenge was to analyze fine particle emission data collected by volunteers who participate in a Citizen Science Project (https://luftdaten.info/en/home-en) and provide data-driven insights on the potential causes of air pollution in major German cities and the surrounding environs. Particularly of concern is the effect that air pollution has on human health as well as the effect government regulated driving bans have on air quality across German cities. On March 5th, Mahdi Esmailoghli presented the key findings of their analysis at the BTW 2019. Having drawn on supplementary data sources (e.g. weather, traffic, geo-position), they reported on the potential factors that affect air quality and explained their system design choices.
