About DFKI

Human-centric AI

DFKI conducts research on "human-centric AI" in the major groundbreaking areas of AI research and applications with a focus on socially relevant topics and scientific excellence. We are convinced that AI technologies can help in meeting the great societal challenges we face such as man-made global warming, social injustices, and dangerous diseases. We dedicate ourselves with great energy to work on AI solutions to these tasks.

Prof. Dr. Elsa Andrea Kirchner, DFKI Robotics Innovation Center (RIC) in Bremen

"The use of AI has the potential to transform research, the economy and society. The biggest point of criticism within society regarding the use of AI, namely the generation of a bias, also shows its potential to depict existing injustices. At the same time, this raises awareness of these grievances, exposes them and calls for solutions in an almost striking way."

Prof. Dr. Elsa Andrea Kirchner, DFKI Robotics Innovation Center (RIC) in Bremen

Shaping the future together

As the largest, independent AI research center worldwide, we initiate, realize and support many activities to develop reliable and trustworthy AI and secure a leading role for Germany and Europe in the international competition. Based on application oriented basic research, the DFKI develops product functions, prototypes and patentable solutions in the field of information and communication technology. Research and development projects are conducted in 26 research departments, ten competence centers and eight living labs.

DFKI is where a diverse and multinational team is actively shaping the future. Our goal is to further strengthen this diversity throughout our management team. DFKI creates career opportunities for its young scientists in science as well as in industry and supports entrepreneurial spin-offs from within based on DFKI's own research results. The DFKI has been encouraging ambitious researchers from DFKI to set up their own companies and actively supporting them in doing so. Thus, over 100 spin-offs with more than 2500 jobs have emerged from the DFKI so far.

Wiebke Brinkmann, Researcher at DFKI Bremen

"The use of AI produces technologies that make the previously impossible possible. In space research, this is leading to unimagined developments that can help to reduce space debris, repair defective satellites and bring the construction of infrastructure on planets in the solar system within realistic reach."
