Marine Perception

Application of sensors to assess environmental and situational awareness in marine and maritime contexts increases continuously. The Marine Perception research department is dedicated towards research and development of intelligent sensors and systems, applicable in oceanic or other aquatic environments. A focus area is the automated detection and classification of marine hazards by means of optical-physical sensor networks. Methods, techniques and tools are adapted and improved enabling the autarkical analysis of multi-sensor data. Fusion of image-based and hyperspectral Information leads to high-dimensional situational awareness that allows for a unique perception of the overall situation, a foundation for targeted, adaptive courses of action of autonomous systems.

Fields of application include all aspects of marine technology (offshore renewables, offshore oil & gas, polar technology, maritime safety engineering, marine research technology and environmental protection); further application areas are linked to monitoring of production processes and environmental situations of business areas that interfere with aquatic media (e.g. water supply, aquaculture, sewage water control or cleaning). The research department closely interacts with the Center for Marine Sensors at University Oldenburg.
