Artificial intelligence is the key topic of 2019. AI-based systems and applications are already part of our lives in a variety of ways: industrial robots that complete difficult or monotonous work, smart computers that can process vast quantities of data in a short period of time. Developments are also continuing, and digitalisation and automation will continue to progress in the future. What opportunities do they offer? What challenges will we have to face? How will this development affect our social interactions? These and other questions are the focus of dialogue between citizens and the worlds of science and research for the 2019 Science Year.
DFKI’s EdTec Lab is also involved via the WAVE project. This uses eight learning stations to make the implications of artificial intelligence systems for everyday life and work tangible, comprehensible and useful to students, trainees, teachers and vocational educators via practical engagement. Fundamental knowledge of the methods, applications and potential of AI is conveyed in a practical way. Topic areas and everyday applications such as AI-based assistance services, speech and language technology, augmented reality or autonomous robots will be educationally presented. Questions about the areas of application, limits, and ethical issues of AI in individuals’ everyday lives will also be tackled.
