Data Science for Social Good – Summer School 2023

The DFKI research department Data Science and its Applications (DSA) is running the Data Science for Social Good (DSSG) program in collaboration with the TU Kaiserslautern in the summer of 2023. After three years of organizing DSSG at the University of Warwick and the Alan Turing Institute in the UK, Sebastian Vollmer and his team brought this concept to Germany in 2022 and will run it again in the summer of 2023.
The fellowship will take place in Kaiserslautern from June 12 to September 1, 2023. The twelve-week program offers a variety of workshops, group work, and lectures that focus on the development of data products that partner organisations from the government and third sector use to positively impact people, society and the environment. Usually, the Summer School results in deliverables that are a combination of analyses, reports, predictive models, and software prototypes. Each team is made up of three to five data science fellows, a technical mentor, and a project manager. Our project partners come from all over the world and work on education, health, energy, public safety, and economic development problems.
Examples of projects might include improving the protection of vulnerable children, prioritizing the reading of independent nursing homes, or reducing corruption in public procurement system.
