Development of a Serious Game to reduce nitrate emissions in pig farming

Development of a Serious Game to reduce nitrate emissions in pig farming

The goal of the PigNPlay project is to provide farmers in training, practice and other target groups with an instrument to raise their awareness and understanding of the topics of “nitrogen emissions in pig farming” and “adaptation to climate change”.

It is meant to promote proactive capacities and identify options for action. The project is based on modelling production methods in agricultural livestock farming that are specific to the agro-intensive region in north-west lower Saxony. To this end, the nitrogen cycle in pig farming project is systematically modelled and embedded in a Serious Game environment with model-based artificial intelligence (AI). The Serious Game enables users to experience virtual scenarios in training and practice and to test appropriate alternatives for their farms in real terms. The Serious Game is developed and prototypically used in cooperation with farmers and as practically as possible (based on the living lab approach). The environmental and climate consequences associated with the use and production of nitrogen in pig farming are to be made more playful and innovative in order to pave the way for appropriate environmental action.
