Robotics Institute Germany, national joint project of robotics research in Germany, coordinated by TU Munich
The Robotics Institute Germany is an initiative by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) aimed at connecting leading robotics labs across Germany to enhance their international visibility, attract talent, and accelerate progress in AI-powered robotics.
DFKI is a key player in the RIG (Robotics Institute Germany) project and is responsible for both coordination and scientific content. Within the consortium, DFKI is involved in several research areas and is particularly responsible for project coordination, management, and the content design of selected work packages. It is actively involved in administrative control, reporting and coordination processes, and internal networking among the participating partners, thereby supporting the structural development and operational management of RIG throughout the entire project period.
In terms of content, DFKI contributes its proven expertise in AI-based robotics to key research and development activities. It assumes leading roles in several research clusters and sub-clusters, for example in the areas of humanoid robotics, neuro-symbolic learning, reconfigurable mobile robotics, manipulation of deformable objects, marine robotics, and production-related robotics. Through this cluster work, DFKI is significantly shaping the scientific agenda of the RIG and making essential contributions to the development of the national roadmap for AI-based robotics in Germany.
In addition, DFKI is heavily involved in the development and networking of research infrastructures. It participates in the recording, structuring, and allocation of existing robotics laboratories within the RIG network.
