Andreas Dengel appointed Fellow of the Asia-Pacific AI Association

Prof. Dr. Prof. h.c. Andreas Dengel was elected a Fellow of the Asia-Pacific AI Association (AAIA) on January 15, 2024. The AAIA thus honors his scientific achievements in the fields of artificial intelligence, document understanding and machine learning.

The AAIA is a non-profit and non-governmental organization established in Hong Kong in 2021. The main mission of the Asia-Pacific Artificial Intelligence Association is to empower scientists in the field of Artificial Intelligence and other fields worldwide to promote the development and application of Artificial Intelligence through academic research, academic exchange, scientific education, scientific exhibitions, academic conferences, academic publications, summer/winter camps and other activities.

Andreas Dengel is Professor of Computer Science at RPTU Kaiserslautern, Head of the Smart Data & Knowledge Services research department and Managing Director of DFKI in Kaiserslautern. He is the founder and initiator of several successful start-ups and has already received numerous major international awards and prizes for his work, just a few of which are mentioned here. In 2019, he was selected by a jury on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) as one of the most influential scientists in the 50-year history of AI in Germany for his research in the field of document analysis. In the same year, he received the Outstanding Achievement Award at the International Conference on Document Analysis and Recognition (ICDAR) in Sydney, Australia.

In 2021, Andreas was awarded the oldest Japanese order, the "Order of the Rising Sun on the Necklace, Golden Rays" in the name of His Majesty Emperor Naruhito and since 2022 he has been a recipient of the Order of Merit of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate.
