Software-supported risk assessment for safe human-machine interaction – BaSys satellite project BaSySafe launched

| Press release | Industry 4.0 | Saarbrücken

In industrial manufacturing, risks and hazards result from the operation of machines. Manufacturers and operators of equipment are required by law to prepare a risk and hazard assessment in order to ensure occupational safety. In a changeable production, in which integrated manufacturing systems are constantly changed, and system components are reconfigured or rearranged, completely new challenges arise from which obligations to comply with safety are derived. The topic’s relevance is demonstrated, among other things, by the proposal for a new EU Machinery Regulation published in April 2021. BaSySafe addresses the challenges specific to a risk and hazard assessment in changeable production.

The project aims to extend the reference implementation provided by BaSys 4.0 with a holistic approach to integrate and maintain safety-related information in industrial manufacturing.

To this end, the project partners are developing a standardized, machine-supported procedure for creating risk and hazard assessment for assembly systems that adds the dimension of safety to the functional scope, maturity level and thus attractiveness of the BaSys middleware. They base this on the concept of the asset administration shell.
An essential component of the solution approach is the provision of a model-based tool for viewing, editing, and combining risk and hazard assessments, which is intended to be compatible with the engineering tools currently available on the market for easier use in practice. The asset administration shell -based approach will provide safer assembly system reconfiguration at execution time, as well as permanent and easy-to-find documentation of safety issues. Machine configurations that are questionable in terms of safety can thus be noticed and remedied at an early stage.

The prototypical implementation is carried out in a joint demonstrator in order to evaluate the project results in different transformation scenarios. The focus is on human-machine interaction, in particular human-robot collaboration at a manual workstation in discrete manufacturing. The demonstrator will be made accessible in a suitable form. In addition, it is planned to make partial models and specifications available in open source.

BaSys 4.0

BaSys 4.0 is the INDUSTRIE 4.0 open-source middleware that has been funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) since 2016. In the BaSys 4.0 project, DFKI is working with 14 partners from research and industry to realize central concepts and standards of the INDUSTRIE 4.0 platform. The project goal is to develop a basic system for production plants that implements the efficient changeability of a production process as a central challenge of INDUSTRIE 4.0. Another satellite project based on the reference implementation provided by BaSys 4.0 is BaSynaos. Here, DFKI is working with its project partners to provide uniform access to real-time data from manufacturing in order to connect external online planning systems.
