“I am very impressed by the many innovative projects of the DFKI. I am all the more pleased that for the past two years work has also been done here in Trier on forward-looking research in the application of AI technologies,” emphasized Minister President Malu Dreyer during a tour of the DFKI branch office at the University of Trier: “AI technologies offer the potential to provide solutions to the most pressing societal challenges of our time, be it in the area of health, the environment or in the social sector. The state of Rhineland-Palatinate recognized this importance some 30 years ago and has since supported both the DFKI itself and the development of further structures.”

Affiliated with the DFKI's Smart Data & Knowledge Services Research Department in Kaiserslautern, the scientists in Trier conduct research at the interface of artificial intelligence and business informatics.

Prof. Dr. Andreas Dengel, Excecutive Director of DFKI in Kaiserslautern and AI Ambassador of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate: "With our colleagues Bergmann and Timm, we have succeeded in integrating two outstanding protagonists of AI in the state into the DFKI network. After Corona threw a spanner in the official opening two years ago, we are very pleased that we have now been able to present the successful development and ambitious plans at the Trier branch to the Minister President in detail."

Prof. Dr. Ralph Bergmann's team is working in the field of Experience-Based Learning Systems on new approaches to intelligent process monitoring and control in various application areas, such as medicine, software robotics, crisis management and production. It was demonstrated using a model of a production plant that is monitored and flexibly controlled by means of artificial intelligence: "We see a huge potential for using experience-based methods to make production processes more resource-efficient and resilient to disruptions in the future. Flexible collaboration between humans and robotics in production can also benefit greatly from this."

The scientists working with Prof. Dr. Ingo Timm in the field of Cognitive Social Simulation presented the dashboard for the pandemic simulation AScore and its successor project AKRIMA. The work combines data processing and information visualization with a simulation component to create a unique crisis management cockpit. This facilitates decision-makers not only in assessing the current situation, but also in predicting the effects of specific measures and crisis responses.
