Deep Linguistic Analysis in Verbmobil

In the Verbmobil project the Language Technology Lab develops the German grammar for analysis and generation as well as the components for the deep, that is, complete and semantically correct analysis. Also, the multilingual grammar development for German, English and Japanese is coordinated. The grammars are developed as unification grammars on the basis of the Head Driven Phrase Structure Grammar.

The analysis of spoken language is much more demanding for the analysis components than that of written language because speech recognition usually has no unique result. Numerous recognition hypotheses must be analyzed in parallel and nearly in real time. Therefore methods for compiling the grammars for efficient processing are developed. For fast pre-processing of word hypotheses finite state automata are generated. Learning techniques are used for training domain specific subgrammars.

  • German grammar and lexicon for analysis and generation, suitable for analysis of spoken language
  • Ambiguity control by the use of underspecified semantic discourse representations to prevent unnecessary disambiguation
  • multilingual grammar development
  • Advanced environment for grammar development PAGE
  • Efficient analysis components through grammar compilation and learning:
  • context free and finite state approximation of grammars - use of Explanation Based Learning for acquiring domain specific subgrammars and preferences
