OphthalmoCDSS – AI for Ophthalmology

AI-based Clinical Decision Assistance for Ophthalmology

Artificial intelligence can support physicians in making complex clinical decisions more efficiently and with greater confidence—particularly in the treatment of chronic eye diseases such as diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration. An AI-based decision support solution provides targeted, practice-oriented assistance for everyday clinical workflows in ophthalmology.

Through AI-driven analysis of OCT imaging data, relevant anatomical structures are automatically segmented and clinically meaningful features, such as visual acuity, are predicted. Based on this analysis, physicians receive traceable, situation-specific treatment recommendations that support informed therapy decisions.

A key feature of the decision support solution is the tight integration of medical imaging data with information from electronic health records (EHR). Relevant clinical metrics are clearly visualized and combined into an integrated overview, ensuring that all decision-relevant information is available at a glance.

The AI-based decision support solution was developed and evaluated in close collaboration with practicing ophthalmologists. Results from a user study demonstrate high user-friendliness as well as a perceived improvement in efficiency within clinical workflows. This provides a robust foundation for the sustainable integration of AI into everyday ophthalmic care.
