Zusammenfassung

A constant increase in autonomous systems can be found across various industries. For instance, the nuclear power industry or the railway industry have already started adopting autonomous systems. Many tasks performed by these systems are safety critical, e.g., monitoring reactor cores of a nuclear power plant or operating automated subway lanes. Consequently, it is essential to implement measures that guarantee a reliable and safe operation of these systems. Therefore, it is required to handle occurring faults. Measures that aim to limit the consequences of faults are referred to as fault-tolerant approaches. Different industries apply different fault-tolerant approaches to achieve an acceptable level of reliability and safety for their automated systems. Even though deviations regarding the level of automation, characteristics, and challenges between the different fields exist, some commonalities can be identified. In this paper, we perform a literature study of fault-tolerant approaches for autonomous systems which are used in the aviation, aerospace, automotive, railway, and nuclear power industry. In doing so, we aim to encourage the knowledge transfer concerning fault-tolerance approaches between these industries.
