Zusammenfassung

The hypothesis that graphical interfaces may have a particular affordance for creative emergence within dialogues was explored through a number of empirical studies of synchronous dialogues using a graphical interface as part of the EC funded Argunaut project. The methodology combined pedagogical design for creativity, a new ‘dialogic’ coding scheme which included creativity in the form of ‘new perspectives’, the use of artificial intelligence graph-matching techniques to assess the reliability of this new code and event recall interviews to explore the validity of the code with participants. Findings suggest that 1) the emergence of new perspectives in a graphical dialogue map can be recognized by a machine algorithm in a way that can be used to provide awareness indicators for moderators, 2) that the trigger events leading to the emergence of new perspectives are most commonly open questions and disagreements and 3) that the spatial representation of messages in a graphically mediated synchronous dialogue can afford creativity.
