Bridging Research and Innovation
During a visit on October 29, 2025, DFKI and LNDS, along with representatives from Saarland’s Ministry of Economic Affairs, engaged with partners of the Luxembourg AI Factory (L-AIF). This European initiative, coordinated by Luxinnovation and supported by Luxembourg’s leading research organizations – including LNDS, LIST, LuxProvide, and the University of Luxembourg – showcased the country’s strong AI ecosystem and commitment to international collaboration.
Discussions centered on leveraging sovereign data infrastructures, creating a shared service catalog, and supporting responsible AI adoption across various sectors. Future projects should include developing secure processing environments for both on-premises and cloud systems, expanding beyond healthcare to universal services, and ensuring compliance with European regulations.
One specific example of collaboration already in progress is the development of secure and trusted data processing. LNDS offers a Secure Processing Environment (SPE) in Luxembourg’s data centers, while DFKI provides expertise in Trusted Research Environments (TRE) with its Secure Machine Learning Architecture (SEMLA), which enables TREs on-premises with multiple security levels. Together, they will connect DFKI’s research network with Luxembourg’s applied innovation capabilities, fostering a lively exchange of knowledge and resources.
A Shared Vision for Europe
This collaboration highlights Luxembourg’s leadership in high-performance computing, data governance, and regulatory sandboxes. By combining their strengths, LNDS and DFKI will help advance Europe’s goal of building sovereign data infrastructures and cross-border AI partnerships, establishing Luxembourg as a key hub in the European AI landscape.
