The DFKI reacts to the growth at the location in Bremen by massively expanding its research and testing infrastructure: Construction work on the second phase of the research facility at Robert-Hooke-Strasse 1 has been in full swing since May 4, 2020. An extensive annex with supplementary premises for the two Bremen research departments Robotics Innovation Center and Cyber-Physical Systems is being built on a construction area of around 4,500 square meters. This includes additional office, seminar and conference rooms, as well as new test facilities, workshops and integration rooms.
Around 13 million euros will be invested in the construction project, of which 4.3 million euros were provided by the State of Bremen from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). DFKI is financing the other two-thirds of the construction costs from its own funds. The project is being carried out by AUG. PRIEN Bauunternehmung GmbH & Co. KG. The extension is directly connected to the building completed in 2013 and is scheduled for completion at the end of 2021.
The aim of the construction project is to create optimal conditions and a platform in Bremen for research into topics such as human-machine cooperation, space and underwater robotics and embedded systems with an experimental environment that is unique in Europe. In the future, the application fields of cyber-physical systems, verification of embedded systems, aerospace, assistance and rehabilitation systems, adaptive production and agricultural robotics are to be advanced here in cooperation with innovative and high-performance companies.
