

The funding decision was announced on February 17, 2026, during a ceremony in Berlin by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology, and Space (BMFTR). Hans Schotten, professor at DFKI and the Rhineland-Palatinate Technical University of Kaiserslautern-Landau (RPTU) and coordinator of the hub, accepted the funding decision on behalf of the Open6GHub consortium.
The national 6G transfer hub Open6GHub+ was launched on January 1, 2026. It builds on the successful predecessor project Open6GHub and focuses in the new phase on the transfer of research results into industrial applications, standards, and markets. The project is funded by the BMFTR as part of the German 6G program, which is thus implementing a central component of its national 6G strategy. During the ceremony in Berlin, the central importance of modern communication technologies as the strategic backbone of a digitalized society was discussed as a key topic. In addition, there was intensive discussion of the challenges posed by the global security and industrial policy situation and the role of 6G technologies for the technological sovereignty of Germany and Europe.
