Data Science for Social Good – Summer School 2022

The DFKI research department Data Science and its Applications (DAS) is running the Data Science for Social Good (DSSG) program in collaboration with Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in Pittsburgh and the University of Kaiserslautern in the summer of 2022. After three years of organizing the DSSG at the University of Warwick and the Alan Turing Institute in the UK, Sebastian Vollmer and his team are now bringing this concept to Germany.
The Summer School will take place in Kaiserslautern from June 6 to August 26, 2022. The twelve-week program offers a variety of workshops, group work, and lectures that focus on the analysis of data. Usually, the Summer School results in deliverables that are a combination of analyses, reports, predictive models, and software prototypes. Each team is made up of three to four data science fellows, a technical mentor, and a project manager. Our project partners come from all over the world and work on education, health, energy, public safety, and economic development problems You get to learn how data science can help solve important social challenges from our fellows and other organizations in our partner cohort. Examples of projects might include improving the protection of vulnerable children, prioritizing the reading of independent nursing homes, or reducing corruption in Paraguay's public procurement system.
