During a conference on artificial intelligence (AI) and diversity in higher education at the FernUniversität, both institutions presented their cooperation project to the public on 14 November: the “AI.EDU Research Lab”.
“We are exploring together how AI can make successful individual studying visible and support it better,” said Prof. Dr. Claudia de Witt, head of the Department of Education Theory and Media Education at the FernUniversität, welcoming the cooperation with the Educational Technology Lab of the DFKI.
The aim is to promote the self- and methodological competence of students. "AI is to support individual learning in the sense of a digital assistance: with abilities or functions, which help to solve problems, to plan or to give recommendations for learning strategies.
“The cooperation with the FernUniversität in Hagen as part of the joint AI.EDU Research Lab offers DFKI an excellent opportunity to test methods and applications of artificial intelligence in studies, teaching and continuing education,” adds Prof. Dr. Niels Pinkwart, head of the Educational Technology Lab research group at the DFKI project office in Berlin.
The project AI.EDU Research Lab is embedded in the research focus Digitization, Diversity, Lifelong Learning (D²L²) at the FernUniversität in Hagen.
Scientists are investigating the possibilities and necessities for universities arising from the big trends of our time: an increasing digitalisation of many areas of life, an increasing diversity in society and a constantly growing need for lifelong education and training.
