Jade University of Applied Sciences is already familiar territory for Frederic Stahl. Since 2022, he has been teaching Data Science there as a lecturer and collaborating with researchers at the university on joint research projects and publications. With his appointment, he aims to further deepen this collaboration and contribute in particular to the development of the Applied Data Science degree program.
At the heart of his work is the question of how artificial intelligence and data science methods can be deployed reliably under real-world conditions. This involves much more than developing and training models. Data quality, changing sensor conditions, the long-term reliability of AI systems, as well as their explainability and resource consumption, are equally important.
From Research to Real-World Application
This approach is closely aligned with Stahl’s research at DFKI. His research interests include explainable and hybrid AI methods as well as approaches that can process data directly at the sensor and in real time. Within the Marine Perception research department, these methods are applied in areas including environmental and marine monitoring.
Since August, Stahl has headed DFKI’s Marine Perception research department at the Oldenburg site, having previously served as acting head. MAP develops AI-based methods for the perception and interpretation of complex marine and environmental data, combining fundamental research with concrete application scenarios.
At Jade University of Applied Sciences, Stahl also aims to closely integrate research, teaching and practical application. Wherever possible, theses and student projects will be linked to ongoing research and address real-world challenges. In addition to environmental and marine topics, he plans to increasingly focus on data-driven challenges faced by small and medium-sized enterprises in the region.
His parallel roles at Jade University of Applied Sciences and DFKI create new opportunities for joint research activities, for involving students in current research, and for transferring AI methods into practical applications.
