QURATOR 2020 – First conference on AI-based curation technologies for culture, media, industry and medicine

| Press release | Learning & Education | Data Management & Analysis | Language & Text Understanding | Speech and Language Technology | Berlin

The QURATOR 2020 – Conference on Digital Curation Technologies will take place in Berlin on 20/21 January 2020. Spanning two days, the ten partner organisations of the project QURATOR will present the latest research findings and development work. With international guest speakers, participants of the event will get the opportunity to discuss current advances in the field of AI and demonstrate the potential for a cross-industry platform for curation technologies.

AI and Content Curation

With the rapidly growing and fragmented supply of data, content and information, many industries are under pressure to prepare more and more content for digital publication in less and less time. As a result, many business models are becoming unprofitable. Against this backdrop, QURATOR can help to make content curation and generation in different industry contexts more efficient and cost-effective by automating specific processes. Intelligent methods and procedures based on language and knowledge technologies, machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) form an essential basis of the platform.

Armin Berger, Managing Director and founder of 3pc GmbH and also QURATOR spokesman explains: "The search for relevant information in heterogeneous sources, the enrichment of digital assets with metadata or the thematic linking of content for storytelling - all these are curating tasks for knowledge workers who generate a high, often no longer affordable manual effort. This is where our project comes in by integrating AI-based processes for OCR, text analysis, image classification, linking, timelining or automated tagging into intelligent tools and making them available as platform services, for example".

Dr. Georg Rehm, Principal Researcher and scientific coordinator of the QURATOR project explains the role of DFKI: "We take care of the development of various semantic enrichment, production and generation services that are provided through the platform. These include Named Entity Recognition, the extraction of relations and time expressions, the identification of discursive structures and false messages. In addition, we develop showcases, e.g., for the curation of journalistic content or social media content, to demonstrate how the relevant practitioners will benefit from AI in the future."

Conference and Workshops

The range of applications of curation technologies is reflected in the program of this conference, which is unique in its focus so far. On the first day of the conference, the QURATOR partners will present their sub-projects and provide insights into the current state of technology development.

Invited talks by internationally renowned experts will address the current state of the art in the use of AI technologies in culture, media and industry.

The spectrum of topics ranges from interactive storytelling and exhibition curation, to media production and curation of biomedical knowledge, to intelligent process modeling and automatic analysis and generation of company-specific knowledge.

The second day of the conference is marked by a series of thematic workshops. In a scientific workshop, recent research findings on basic technologies for intelligent curation tools will be presented.

Furthermore, QURATOR partners will offer practical workshops for users from culture, media, industry and health tech. In these workshops concrete applications for curation technologies will be presented and their practicability discussed. Participants will be able to test software prototypes and gain insight into the current state of development.
