SIGMOD, which took place in Bengaluru (India) from 31 May to 5 June 2026, is one of the most important international forums for research into database systems, data analysis and AI-supported data management.
A leading role in the international data management community
In his role as Program Chair, Prof. Binnig, together with his colleague Prof. Dr Sudeepa Roy (Duke University, USA), was responsible for the conference’s scientific programme – from the selection of papers to the shaping of the research agenda. SIGMOD 2026 received more than a thousand submissions, reflecting the high level of dynamism in the field.
“SIGMOD is one of the most important international forums for data-driven innovation. It brings together leading academics and industry representatives to shape the future of data-intensive systems,” said Prof. Binnig.
A broad range of topics from AI to systems engineering
Researchers from DFKI presented various papers at the workshops held as part of the conference.
At the workshop ‘Data Management on New Hardware’ (DaMoN) focused on data management on modern hardware, a field in which the German research community has been particularly well represented for years. Researchers from Darmstadt secured a total of four publications at the event and won both the Best Long Paper Award and the Best Short Paper Award.
At the workshop ‘Exploiting Artificial Intelligence Techniques for Data Management’ (aiDM), Dr Pratyush Agnihotri, Deputy Head of the DFKI SAIDE Research Division, presented new approaches to the energy-efficient evaluation of large language models. Dr Benjamin Hättasch, Research Division Manager and Deputy Head of the Research Division, presented a system for self-organising databases. In future, such systems are expected to store data autonomously in a semantically meaningful way, thereby scaling significantly better for tasks that previously had to be carried out by humans with great effort.
In the area of data formats and performance (Formats@SIGMOD), researchers from Darmstadt shared new insights into the hidden costs of modern data formats and presented analyses of suitable formats for GPUs, which are becoming increasingly important. Presentations were also given on the topics of testing and data processing, as well as natural language querying of databases.
Keynote on the future of database systems
A particular highlight was the keynote by Prof. Dr Carsten Binnig as part of DEEM@SIGMOD, entitled: ‘Do we still need databases in an AI world?’. The presentation examined the future role of traditional database systems in the age of powerful AI models.
DFKI research on AI and data management
SIGMOD 2026 clearly demonstrated how closely data management and artificial intelligence are now intertwined. Topics such as machine learning for database systems, the efficient processing of large volumes of data, and new architectures for AI-native systems were at the heart of the programme.
Through its research activities in the field of data and AI systems, DFKI is closely linked to the SIGMOD community. At the Darmstadt site, there is a particular emphasis on the development of systemic AI, learning systems and data-driven decision support.
“Our work demonstrates the extent to which data management is currently being transformed by AI, new hardware and distributed systems – and how important integrated solutions are,” said Prof. Carsten Binnig.
At the upcoming international ‘Very Large Databases’ (VLDB) conference, which will take place from 31 August to 4 September 2026 in Boston (USA), DFKI will further enhance its international profile in this field of research.
