Test and Experiment Facilities for the Agri-Food Domain

The research project agrifoodTEF-DE (Germany) develops independent service blueprints to test and validate AI systems as well as robotic solutions under practical conditions in the agricultural sector. Our main goal is to provide support for future developments of technologies of companies and research facilities within the agri-food domain.

The focus of the project is on applied usage of synthetic data, benchmark and testing of robotic applications, edge computing applications as well as legal conformity of AI and robotic systems in agriculture. The DFKI is thereby involved in automatised synthetic data generation within the agricultural sector.

Applied AI technologies require a growing demand for extensive and high-quality data. Both quantity and quality of available information play a decisive role for algorithm training in the context of supervised and unsupervised machine learning (ML). The quality of training data particularly has a direct impact on the efficiency of an AI system and thus on the quality of the relevant results. Artificially generated data can therefore increase the efficiency and economic benefit of available resources. Within the project, we develop process pipelines as service blueprints that allow the scanning of plants and plant structures to generate botanically accurate 3D models. By varying these models in virtual scenarios, various cost-effective synthetic data can be obtained. Due to their high variability, the parameters of plant models and scenarios can be adapted to specific requirements such as e.g. an increased training efficiency or evaluation purposes.

The German research project agrifoodTEF-DE has a “third-party” status in the European project network agrifoodTEF. The intent of the project is to contribute to a sustainable digitalisation of the agricultural sector.
