curACell aims to establish a trustworthy AI research environment at the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) in Kaiserslautern, enabling the secure processing, analysis, and long-term preservation of sensitive biomedical data.
To achieve this, curACell provides isolated AI research cells in which biomedical data, AI software, and research results are processed in strictly separated and protected environments. Advanced virtualization technologies, confidential computing, and fine-grained access controls ensure that AI research involving sensitive health data can be conducted securely, efficiently, transparently, and in compliance with data protection regulations.
A second key objective is the sustainable preservation of AI research environments. Through the curACell Depot, research results, processed biomedical data, and AI software can be archived securely for long-term reuse. Distributed cloud storage, redundant data replication, encryption, and usage control mechanisms ensure traceability, interoperability, and the long-term reusability of scientific AI research.
The project builds upon the concepts of the curAHub AI service platform developed within the curATime Future Cluster and extends them with a highly secure infrastructure dedicated to AI research on biomedical data. In doing so, curACell supports research institutions and companies in Rhineland-Palatinate in developing innovative AI applications for biotechnology, diagnostics, therapeutic development, and personalized medicine.
