The IMPACT project aims to support companies in the Trier region through the application of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, thereby helping to mitigate the effects of the skilled labour shortage. By introducing AI-supported workforce planning, strategic qualification and training measures, and hybrid AI solutions, the project seeks to improve operational efficiency and create measurable value for businesses. Close collaboration with industry partners ensures the development of practical, application-oriented solutions while fostering sustainable technology transfer.
A central objective of the project is the targeted use of AI to automate repetitive tasks, optimize business processes through data-driven methods, and reduce the workload of skilled employees. In addition, digital twins and agent-based simulations will be used to improve workforce deployment and qualification planning. Hybrid AI systems will be tailored to the specific needs of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to facilitate their adoption.
IMPACT further develops existing technologies from the DFKI research departments Experience-Based Learning Systems (EBLS) and Cognitive Social Simulation (CSS) and integrates them into a common framework that provides companies with easy access to AI technologies. Key developments include automated document processing, generative AI technologies such as Large Language Models (LLMs), digital twins of employees, and simulation-based approaches for process optimization. Intuitive user interfaces will enable the use of these technologies even by users without extensive AI expertise.
The project focuses on two application scenarios: optimizing workforce deployment and qualification planning in the service sector, and increasing the flexibility of production processes through hybrid AI systems that guide and support employees during their work. These use cases will be developed and validated in close cooperation with industrial partners. In addition, training concepts will be developed to promote knowledge transfer and ensure the sustainable adoption of the resulting solutions.
Ultimately, IMPACT aims to empower companies to independently adopt and further develop AI technologies, mitigate the impact of the skilled labour shortage, and strengthen their capacity for innovation and long-term competitiveness.
